Robot Operator

We are an early-stage startup technology company headquartered in La Cañada Flintridge, CA developing software for autonomous strawberry harvesting.

This is a part time, seasonal role located at GoodFarms in Oxnard, CA where we run our commercial prototype strawberry harvester.

What You Will Do 

As a robot operator, you will be responsible for controlling our electric vehicle (Farm-ng Amiga micro-tractor) and operating our robot. Extensive training will be provided! You will be paired up with a partner during the shift. Shifts are somewhat flexible but will be scheduled between 5am and 3pm. Since you are working outside, you will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions such as wind, rain, and direct sun exposure. You must be capable of being alert throughout the early morning. The farm does not have much artificial light for the very early am. The vehicle is equipped with its own source of light, and you are given additional headlamps.

A Typical Shift

  • Inspect the vehicle – following a checklist, you will be required to ensure the vehicle is in good standing and ready to drive. This may involve tightening any loose bolts, cable management, refueling the generator, etc. 

  • Prepare the laptop – launch applications and initialize software for the run

  • Preparing to perform the test – following a checklist, you will be required to set up necessary equipment needed for the test. This may involve setting up GoPros, preparing inspection area on vehicle with clamshells(cases) needed to store the berries, labeling the clamshells, etc. 

  • Follow instructions for performing the required test for that shift

  • Perform Quality Control on the strawberries: inspect the berries as they are picked and refer to a grading scale to determine which bins they belong in 

Core Requirements

  • Strong communication skills; bilingual a plus! 

  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail 

  • Independent worker 

What You Will Learn 

  • GitLab, Terminator and Python  

  • Basic knowledge of calipers

  • Measuring in metric units 

Physical Capabilities 

  • Should be capable of lifting at least 40 pounds and walking long distances 

Compensation

  • Hourly pay rate of $20-25 depending on experience
